European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide $34 million loan
to Almaty Kala Zharyk company for the project on modernization of street lighting in the Kazakh city of Almaty, the press service of Almaty administration reported on June 10.

The corresponding loan agreement was signed during the meeting of Almaty Mayor Akhmetzhan Yesimov with the EBRD's head Suma Chakrabarti.

New energy-efficient technologies will reduce the cost of the Almaty city budget for the maintenance of street lighting and electricity consumption by 30 percent.

Akhmetzhan Yesimov noted that four projects worth over $120 million in the transport sector have been implemented since 2009 in the framework of cooperation between the EBRD and Almaty.

"Today, after signing the agreement with the EBRD, we initiate a new project on the modernization of the street lighting, which corresponds to Kazakhstan's Green Economy Strategy. This project will enable to start introduction of innovation and energy-efficient technologies in the street lighting system in our city, " Akhmetzhan Yesimov said.

The mayor noted that there is a significant potential for cooperation with the EBRD in all the sectors of the urban economy of the city of Almaty. Such major projects as the construction of the light rail lines, modern solid waste recycling plant, as well as the introduction of electronic ticketing in the public transport are under development in the city, he said.

The head of the EBRD, Sir Suma Chakrabarti expressed readiness to continue cooperation with Almaty.
