Azerbaijan sees almost 3 percent increase in agricultural production

Azerbaijan's agricultural production at current prices increased by 2.7 percent in Jan.-May, compared to the same period of 2013 and exceeded 1.128 billion AZN, the country's State Statistical Committee said in its report.

The livestock production increased by 3.1 percent, while the crop production dropped by 0.6 percent during the reporting period.

The mass planting of spring crops has been completed in Azerbaijan.

As of June 1, a 342,500 hectare area was sown with spring crops, 73,300 hectares - vegetables, 61,500 hectares - potatoes, 61,300 hectares - grains and legumes, 26,800 hectares - melons, 21,100 hectares - cotton, 9,800 hectares - feeding sunflower and 5,500 hectares were sown with sugar beets.

The crop areas of grains and legumes decreased by 13 percent, vegetables - 1.6 percent, potatoes - 4.8 percent, melons - 3.7 percent, cotton - 8.6 percent.

At the same time, the crop areas of feeding sunflower and sugar beet increased by 11.1 and 11.8 percent, respectively.

The committee's report said that the country's farms produced around 77,900 tonnes of vegetables in January-May.

Azerbaijan produced some 174,700 tonnes of meat (live weight), 753,000 tonnes of milk, 638.1 million chicken eggs and 12,600 tonnes of wool during the reporting period.

The meat production increased by 2.1 percent, milk - 2.8 percent, chicken eggs - 12.6 percent and wool production saw a 1.5 percent increase in the country in January-May.
