Kazakhstan to reconstruct runways of 5 airports

By Elena Kosolapova - Trend: Kazakhstan will reconstruct airport runways in five cities in 2014-2017, Kazinform reported on June 24.

"The reconstruction of the runway at Taraz and Shymkent airports was completed in 2013. In 2014 it is scheduled to start the reconstruction of the runways at Uralsk and Petropavlovsk airports. Semei and Kostanay airports' runways are planned for reconstruction in 2015-2016, Oskemen airport's runway - in 2016-2017, "Kazakh Transport and Communications Ministry told the agency.

All the airports in Kazakhstan, except Almaty airport, are not working at full capacity.
"In this regard, there is no need to construct new international airports, except the expansion of Almaty airport's terminal facilities or construction of a new airport near the city of Almaty, " the ministry said.

Kazakhstan has 18 airports of national and regional significance, 16 of them are allowed to serve international flights, and 12 meet the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Kazakhstan implements the program on reconstruction of all the airports. In total 13 runways and 9 terminals have been reconstructed so far.
