Iran has put 12 new thermal power plants into operation since September last year.

Majid Salehi, the managing director of Iran's Power Industry Development Organization, said that six of those 12 thermal power plants have been established by the private sector, the Fars news agency reported on August 1.

"All 12 power plants have a total power generation capacity of 1934 megawatts," he added.

Iran's thermal, hydroelectric, and nuclear power plants have generated nearly 100,000 gigawatt hours of electricity in the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21).

The country's electricity generation has increased by 7 percent in the current year.

Thermal power plants accounted for 88,543 gigawatt hours of the total electricity generated so far.

Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually during the past 10 years. Currently Iran is the biggest electricity producer in the Middle East.

Iran's total electricity generation currently stands at 70,000 megawatt hours.

The Islamic Republic currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
