People crossing between Azerbaijan, Iran decreases by 10 percent

Passenger traffic between Iran and Azerbaijan via four custom checkpoints has decreased by 10.23 percent during the 4-month period from March 21 compared to the same period of the preceding year (Iran's fiscal year starts on March 21).

The Iranian Custom Administration's latest report released on Aug. 13 suggests that 868,477 people have passed the border checkpoints of Astara, Bilasuvar, Poldasht and Julfa between Iran and Azerbaijan during the period. The figure stood at 967,504 during the same period of last year (March 21 - July 22, 2013).

Bilasuvar topped the list of custom checkpoints between Iran and Azerbaijan so far this year, in terms of passenger traffic with 331,288 passengers, while Julfa had 256,120 passengers, Astara -237,120 passengers and Poldasht - 43,949 passengers.

In the same four-month period of 2013, Bilasuvar custom checkpoint stood at the top of the list of passenger traffic between the two countries with 401,758 passengers, followed by Julfa- 310,255 passengers, Astara- 223,722 passengers and Poldasht-31,769 passengers.

Some 11.15 million people have passed in total through Iran's border checkpoints in the four-month period, which indicates a 6.65 percent increase over the same period of preceding year.
About 5.665 million people have entered the country, while some 5.485 million have exited from checkpoints during the period.

Gheshm airport, Imam Khomeini airport and Kish airport customs were the top three checkpoints in terms of passenger traffic with 2.564 million, 2.094 million and 1.141 passengers checking in and out during the period.
