As of August 1, 2014, Azerbaijan has officially registered 36,700 people as unemployed, 40.7 percent of them being women, according to a report from Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee (SSC).

According to the SSC report, which covered January-July 2014, since early 2014 the number of unemployed in Azerbaijan increased slightly (by January 1, 2014 there were 36,206 unemployed).

The average unemployment benefit in Azerbaijan is 247.4 AZN.

The SSC said that as of early August 2014, the economically active population of Azerbaijan amounted to 4,803,400, some 4,565,600 of this being engaged in labor activity.

Meanwhile, as of August 1, 2014 there were 1,510,900 people working on hire, including 891,600 people working in the public sector, and 619,300 people - in the private sector.

Aside from that the number of those employed in the oil sector stood at 37,200, and in the non-oil sector - 1,473,700. There were 1,466,100 people working on hire and engaged in non-agricultural sector in Azerbaijan.

Some 22.6 percent out of those working on hire in the manufacturing sector are employed - seven percent being employed in construction sector, 6.6 percent - in the processing industry, 2.9 percent - in agriculture, forestry and fishery, 2.5 percent - in the mining industry, 1 9 percent - in the production and distribution of electricity, gas and steam, 1.7 percent - in the water supply, waste treatment and recycling.

According to the report, some 22.3 percent of those working in the service sector is concentrated in education, 18.7 percent - in trade, repair of vehicles, 8.7 percent - in provision of health and social services, 6.6 percent - in the governance, defense, and social security areas, 5.1 percent - transportation and warehousing, 3.8 percent - recreation, entertainment and the arts, 3.6 percent - in professional, scientific and technical activities, 1.9 percent - in financial and insurance activities, 1.7 percent - in the communication and information area, 1.6 percent - in the provision of administrative and support services, 1.4 percent - tourist accommodation and catering, 1.1 percent - in other sectors, as well as 0.9 percent - in real estate deals.

The official exchange rate for August 19 is 0.7842 AZN/USD.
