Iran has established a special working group aimed to fins new markets in Russia and boost food exports to that country.

Gholamhossein Shafei, the chairman of Iran's Chamber of Commerce, said a delegation will travel to Russia in the near future to study the Russian market needs, Iran's Fars news agency reported on September 2.

We are planning to use maritime transportation capacities in Amirabad, Noshahr, Anzali, and Astrakhan ports, as well as road transportation capacities in Sarakhs Special Economic Zone in this regard, he explained.

The Russian market welcomes Iranian citrus fruits, kiwi, pomegranate, and grape, as no Central Asian country raises citrus fruits, he said.

Russia wants to import Iranian food products after Moscow imposed a ban on the import of most agricultural products from the Western countries.

Iran exported $5.2 billion worth of food and agricultural products and imported $13.2 billion worth of the products in the previous Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2014, according to the Iranian Customs Administration statistics.

Food and agricultural trade accounted for 20.2 percent of the country's total non-oil trade in the past Iranian calendar year, ISNA quoted Kaveh Zargaran, the secretary general of the association of Iranian food industries, as saying in May.

Pistachios, tomato paste, yoghurt, ice cream, fruit juice, candies and biscuits, as well as cheese were the main items exported from Iran, he said. Rice, soy meal, corn fodder, unrefined sugar, frozen meat, banana, and packed butter were the main items imported to Iran.
