Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 6 / Trend , A. Badalova/
The Nabucco pipeline will never cross the territory of Armenia, said Mihály Bayer, Hungary's Special Envoy for the Nabucco project.
"I do not think that the shareholders of the Nabucco project will change the route of the gas pipeline," Bayer said in Baku on Oct. 6, when speaking at the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan.
Earlier, the European Commissioner for Energy Andris Piebalgs said that Armenia will not participate in the Nabucco project. He said the talks regarding Armenia's participation in the project are not held, and the list of the participant-countries does not include this country.
Bayer said the Azerbaijani gas will be transported through the existing Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline (South Caucasus Pipeline), which now is exporting the fuel to Georgia and Turkey from the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field.
"But if the Nabucco project requires more gas and the South Caucasus Pipeline is not be able to provide this volume of gas, I am sure that the company will be able to build a new pipeline," said Bayer.
The Nabucco gas pipeline project will transport gas from the Caspian region and the Middle East to the EU. Construction of the pipeline is expected to begin in 2011 and the first supplies - in 2014. Its maximum capacity will be 31 billion cubic meters per year.
