Turkmenistan and China "can be proud of their level of mutual trust and understanding," Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov said in an interview with Chinese media.
The national Altyn Asyr television channel broadcast the interview earlier this week. The interview was synchronized with the opening of the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China transnational gas pipeline Dec.4. The leaders of all four countries were invited to the opening ceremony.
The economies of Turkmenistan and China compliment each other, the president said. He noted that the trade turnover between the two countries has increased almost 40 times in recent years compared to 2000 and "the last year were close to $0.5 billion."
China is one of Turkmenistan's largest foreign trade partners. About 30 enterprises with Chinese capital operate in the country and over 53 investment projects totaling $1 billion and more than 1.4 billion yuan have been registered.
Chinese companies in Turkmenistan work in the oil and gas, telecommunications, transport, agriculture, textile, chemical, food, healthcare and construction sectors.
"We have established effective mechanisms for cooperation in various fields and a solid legal base. Our countries made fruitful contacts on the governmental level and have established ties through business organizations, public organizations in culture and science," he added.
