Russia's Gazprom secured a deal to buy some 15.5 billion cubic metres of gas from Uzbekistan, roughly the same amount as was proposed for the current year, the energy giant said on Monday, Reuters reported.
Last January, Uzbekistan offered to sell 16 billion cubic metres of gas to Russia this year and has said it could double that amount within the next decade.
Gazprom, Russia's state-controlled gas export monopoly, used to buy Central Asian gas and sells it on to Europe but the demand for gas dwindled to to the global economic downturn.
Last week, Russia agreed to import up to 30 billion cubic metres of Turkmen gas under a long-term deal, after the supplies were halted in April due to a pipeline blast.
