Georgian and Azerbaijani power engineering specialists discussed building the 500-kilovolt Gardabani - Samukh transmission line in Tbilisi, the Georgian State Electric System told Trend.
Azerenergy President Etibar Pirverdiyev visited Georgia to discuss the project.
According to the company, the construction will be completed in early 2012.

"The sides will sign a contract in the near future," the Georgian State Electric System said.
New power transmission lines will be laid along the Georgian borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey. According to the Georgian Energy Ministry, the Czech company Energo Pro Georgia is engaged in the construction. According to preliminary data, the project cost is $150 million.

At present, 330-kilovolt power transmission lines link Georgia and Azerbaijan's energy systems, but the new transmission lines will be much powerful at around 500 kilovolts.
Some $100 million lari ($ 1 = 1.70 lari) has been allocated for the development of Georgia's energy sector from the state budget. The new lines will increase Georgia's electricity exports to neighboring countries.

According to Georgian Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri, electricity exports to Turkey increased by almost 10 times over the past few years.
