Europe sees Turkmenistan as a prospective supplier of natural gas - OSCE

European countries see Turkmenistan as one of the most promising natural gas suppliers and are ready to discuss specific issues of cooperation in this strategic direction, Secretary General OSCE Lamberto Zannier said at the meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government reported on Friday.

European countries see Turkmenistan as one of the most promising natural gas suppliers and are ready to discuss specific issues of cooperation in this strategic direction, Secretary General OSCE Lamberto Zannier said at the meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government reported on Friday.

The two sides noted that in the light of contemporary realities and interests of the majority of OSCE member the most important area of cooperation within the organization seems to be a collaboration to ensure the security of international energy supplies.

Further confirmation of this is organized conference in Ashgabat these days called to intensify international energy dialogue.

The information indicates that Zannier praised the active position of Turkmenistan, who spoke with a number of important constructive initiatives aimed at creating a modern model of international partnership in this critical area and the development of new approaches to global energy security.

Ashgabat follow the energy policy the most important aspect of which is to diversify export routes for Turkmen energy resources to world markets.

According to the information, Zannier noted "the deep interest of the largest international organization he heads for further expansion and strengthening of comprehensive fruitful cooperation meeting the interests of global security and sustainable development."

Berdimuhamedov at last year's summit of OSCE in Astana pointed out that "the most important area on which the efforts of the OSCE to focus, is seen to ensure the security of international energy supplies."

Turkmenistan is a significant player in the energy market in the Caspian region, the country is fourth in the world with natural gas reserves after Russia, Iran and Qatar.

In December 2009, the gas pipeline to China was put into operation, in January 2010 there was an additional branch to Iran, thus it let expand the market for energy resources, which was tightly tied to Russia.

Among the topics discussed projects: additional pipeline to Russia (Caspian - via Kazakhstan), Europe (Nabucco - on the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan) and India (Transafghan through Pakistan).
