Central Asia is an important region in global energy picture, Lynne M.Tracy, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs told in her speech at Turkmenistan International Oil and Gas Expo in Ashgabat.

"Its substantial energy resources are well-placed to feed the growing demand of European and Asian markets," she said.

With its strategic geographic location, Central Asia is poised to become an increasingly important supplier of an array of energy resources, from hydrocarbons to hydropower, and even uranium needed to fuel a cleaner, more efficient, and growing regional economy, Tracy said.

She believes the long-term stability in Central Asia requires job creation, inclusive economic growth, and continued foreign and domestic investment.

Tracy mentioned that Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and the EU continue negotiations on an agreement for construction of a Trans-Caspian pipeline and exports of Turkmen gas to Europe, the United States supports the Trans-Caspian pipeline.

"We confirm the proposition that if Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan agree on a pipeline that crosses only their territorial waters, no other country has veto power over that decision," she said.

Tracy expressed the support of U.S. for continued progress on the proposed Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline- or "TAPI".

"Pipelines are long-term projects with long-term horizons and, consequently, long-term benefits. Realization of this project would further diversify Turkmenistan's energy market options, provide revenue and jobs for Afghanistan at a critical time in its economic development, and bring clean fuel to the growing economies of Pakistan and India," she said.
