Egypt plans to start importing Russian liquefied gas by early summer of 2013, Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Osama Kamal and President's Assistant Essam el-Haddad will visit Russia in the coming days to discuss the issue. During the three-day visit, discussions will focus on the energy sector and, in particular, imports of Russian gas into Egypt.

In addition, the agency reported that Egypt is also in talks with Qatar to supply gas to Egypt. To this end, Prime Minister of Egypt Hisham Kandil will visit Doha on Thursday.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi during talks with President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS summit in March 2013 spoke about the possibility of gas supplies from Russia to Egypt.

"I would like to open a new page in our relations in regard to the gas sector and in particular, the supply of Russian gas to Egypt," he said.

For more than a year Egypt has been struggling with a fuel and energy crisis. Fuel prices are rising sharply and there is an acute shortage of energy, particularly for power plants.
Egypt has appealed to the Arab countries for help in solving the energy crisis. Iraq and Libya have expressed their willingness to supply oil and petroleum products to the country under relaxed conditions with a credit payment.
