Reserves of light oil have been discovered in the Sirnak province in eastern Turkey on the slopes of Mount Judi, The Lira newspaper reported on Friday.

According to the report, oil exploration in the area has been carried out in the past six months by the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO). Oil reserves have been discovered on the Calishkan-1 field at a depth of 2900 metres.

TPAO plans to increase the depth of the well for another 1000 metres after which the exact reserves of the field and terms of starting oil production will be established.

Earlier, the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry's report stated that as part of the work on discovering new oil and gas wells in Turkey, TPAO has opened 11 oil and six gas wells in the country.

In total, during the reporting period, 56 wells were drilled, 54 of which are onshore and two offshore.

In 2012 eight oil fields were discovered in the south-eastern part of Turkey.

Turkey actively searches for oil fields in order to reduce dependence on oil supplies from abroad.
