Uzbekistan to invest $400 million in hydro power projects

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Nov. 22
By Demir Azizov- Trend:

Uzbekistan will pay some $400 million for the implementation of a number of hydro power projects in 2014-2017, a representative of Uzbekenergo JSC told Trend on Nov.21.
According to the company's representative, a total of around $165.7 million is planned to be invested in the modernisation and increased capacity of Farhad HPP and Lower Bozsu cascade (HPP-14).

Under the modernisation of both power plants, it is planned to replace power generators and turbines as well as electrical equipment, relay protection and the communication system. The implementation of the project will increase the generation capacity of the two HPPs in total by 30 megawatt.

According to the Uzbekenergo HPP representative, it is planned to announce a tender on the selection of general contractor for the project by the end of this year and into early 2014.

The project with a total cost of $165.7 million is being financed by the funds of the Islamic Development Bank to the sum of $100 million allocated to the Uzbek government in early November 2013, as well as through the funds of Uzbekenergo JSC.

Russian Power Machines JSC will begin the installation of equipment in early 2014 within the modernisation project of Charvak HPP in Uzbekistan. Within the project's $53.9 million worth of backing, it is planned to modernise four hydro units at the Charvak HPP in order to increase the capacity of each hydro unit from 155 megawatt to 175 megawatt. The implementation of the project will ensure supplementary electricity generation to a volume of 120 million kilowatt per hour.

According to the contract, the Russian company will replace the stator windings on three hydro generators with a capacity of 155 megawatts and set new excitation systems.

Power Machines will produce three hydraulic turbine wheels for the first, second and fourth hydraulic units. In addition, the hydro-mechanical part of regulators and oil-pressure installations will be modernised at all four hydraulic units, as well as the automatic control system of hydraulic units to be reconstructed with the creation of visual monitoring and control at HPP level.

The project will be financed by Uzbekenergo.

Charvak HPP is the parent and the most powerful hydropower plant as part of Chirchik Bozsu cascade of hydro power plant complex hydraulic structures on the River Chirchik in Uzbekistan. The capacity of the HPP is 620 megawatt and the average annual output of electricity is two billion kilowatt per hour.
