President: World countries support Turkmenistan's energy security initiatives

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Jan. 12

More and more countries realize the importance of Turkmenistan's international safety initiatives, namely in energy, transport, environment and support them, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Saturday.

"This creates favorable conditions for expanding and intensifying the bilateral relations," the president said. "The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution "Reliable and stable transit of energy resources and its role in ensuring sustainable development and international cooperation" in May 2013 initiated by Turkmenistan."

President Berdimuhamedov said that the number of Turkmenistan's supporters standing for Ashgabat's views on the key issues of global development is steadily growing. This is stipulated by the fact that more than 70 countries acted as co-authors of the resolution on the security of energy transit.

The UN News Center reported earlier that at a meeting with representatives of the Turkmen government in New York in September 2013, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed Turkmenistan's initiative to ensure energy security. It is known that it is planned to hold a meeting of international experts on the subject in Ashgabat in early 2014.

Ashgabat believes that the coordinated actions of producing countries, transit countries and consumer countries, capable of optimizing the economic development are required in the modern conditions.

Turkmenistan is one of the key natural gas suppliers in the Caspian region supplying fuel to China, Russia and Iran. An additional gas pipeline to Russia (the Caspian Sea - through Kazakhstan), to Europe (via the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan and Turkey) and India (Trans-Afghanistan through Pakistan) are among the discussed projects.

The Turkmen President stressed that the management of the country's fuel and energy sector must concentrate its efforts to operate open fields, in particular the industrial development of the Galkynysh gas field recognized as the second largest field in the world.

"It is necessary to increase oil production, to ensure the necessary production volumes of natural gas and its supply to foreign countries in the volumes corresponding to the signed contracts," the president said. "It is also necessary to continue increasing production and export supplies of liquefied gas."

"It is necessary to take concrete actions to complete the construction of the bitumen production enterprise, the planned oil and gas pipelines," he said.
