By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

The work on an investment project involving the construction of a gas chemical complex for the production of polyethylene and polypropylene in the Kyyanly seaside settlement is being conducted in the Caspian region of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen government reported on Feb. 24.

Deputy Prime Minister Baimyrat Hojamuhammedov, who is responsible for the development of the Turkmen fuel and energy complex, made this statement at a recent government meeting in Ashgabat.

A new project is planned to be implemented as part of the oil and gas industry development project for the period up to 2030.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov gave instructions for developing the fuel and energy complex and drawing the foreign investments in this area, according to the report.

"Along with the expansion of the scope of work for the development of hydrocarbon deposits in the country, the priority should be given to the modernization and technical upgrading of the petrochemical industry, construction of modern gas-chemical enterprises," according to a statement.

It was reported in November 2013 that a number of industrial facilities worth $ 10 billion, including a gas chemical complex in Kyyanly will be built with Japanese capital in Turkmenistan in the near future. The Turkmen State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs and the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) signed a cooperation agreement to implement a large-scale project in September 2013.

A large number of gas fields containing ethane are situated in Turkmenistan. The commissioning of a gas chemical complex will allow establishing widespread production of polyethylene and polypropylene within five years.

Ashgabat hosted a conference on "Implementation of scientific and practical potential of a gas and chemical industry" in 2013. The production facilities for the production of such new products as caustic soda, chlorine and its derivatives, potash fertilizers, construction materials made of polyurethane, wall tiles, building glass used in construction, thermal insulation composite materials made of basalt fibers will be established in the country.
