Uzbekistan plans to modernize around 80 percent of substations operating in its power supply system from 2014 to 2016, a representative of Uzbekenergo State JSC told Trend on April 23.

It is planned to replace the obsolete equipment at over 1,300 substations within three years under the project totaling $166 million, according to the company representative.

The project is planned to be financed with about $80 million worth loan of Uzbekistan's Reconstruction and Development Fund, the loans of local banks and with equity of Uzbekenergo.

Currently, around 1,673 substations of 35 KV, with transformer capacity of over 40 million KVA and around 67,600 transformer units of 6-10 KV, with the capacity of 22.5 million KVA, are in operation of Uzbekenergo.

At present, about 45 power plants with the total capacity of nearly 13,000 MV, operate in Uzbekistan's power supply system. Up to 90 percent of electricity produced in the country falls to the company's ten power plants with the total capacity of 11.6 million KV.

Power generation in the country increased by 3.2 percent in 2013, compared to 2012 and stood at 54.207 billion KV per hour.
