The East-West gas pipeline, designed to export Turkmen gas to the world markets, will be constructed in the near future, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov told the delegates of the International Gas Congress on May 20.

"This gas line, beginning from Shatlyk field in the south-east of the country and passing through the territory of Mary, Akhal and Balkan provinces, will reach the settlement of Belek on the coast of the Caspian Sea," according to the statement.

It is also stressed that the project, uniting all the country's large gas storage facilities into a single system, aims to create favorable conditions for the export of Turkmen "blue fuel" to the world markets in any direction.

Earlier, it was reported that Turkmenneftegazstroy and Turkmengaz state concerns are involved in the construction of an 800 kilometer pipeline and worth over $2 billion.

Eight compressor stations will be built as part of the project implementation. It was initially reported that the gas pipeline is expected to be commissioned in 2015.

This gas pipeline is expected to provide the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline with raw materials. It can be laid through the Caspian Sea to the coast of Azerbaijan. Turkmen gas can be potentially supplied to the markets of Turkey and Europe.
