South Korean consortium of LG International Corporation and Hyundai Engineering Corporation Ltd will construct a processing facility at the Turkmenbashi oil refinery in Turkmenistan.

The capacity of the facility will be equal to two million tonnes per year, Turkmenistan's Ministry of Oil and Gas Industry and Natural Resources said on July 21.

The facility will increase the production of tar, light and heavy gas oil (diesel and oil fractions) at the enterprise. The products of this unit will increase the production of environmentally friendly motor gasoline, lubricants, liquefied gas, coke, and bitumen.

Local experts believe that the demand of the world market for more qualitative fuel increases due to the tightened international standards for the operating ability and environmental safety of marketable energy resources.

Besides the reconstructed facilities, there are a millisecond catalytic cracking unit, a catalytic reforming unit, a diesel hydro-treating unit and a jet fuel treating unit at the enterprise.

The new delayed coking refineries with a tar de-asphalting unit, a primary distillation unit and other technological facilities of large capacity are being built.

A priority in the refinery modernization is to increase processing of hydrocarbons.

Turkmenistan plans to bring the capacity of the oil refining industry up to 15 million tonnes per year in 2015, up to 20 million tonnes in 2020, up to 22 million tonnes in 2025, up to 30 million tonnes in 2030.

At this stage, the country annually produces about 10 million tonnes of oil. Most of this oil is processed at local refineries.
