Azerbaijan adds energy to Baku power plant

Construction of the second combined-cycle setting at Shimal power plant in Baku is being conducted according to schedule, Azerenergy JSC, the country's largest power producer told Trend Aug. 28.

Construction of the second combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 409-megawatt at Shimal is of great importance in terms of strengthening of the energy security of the Absheron Peninsula.

"All works on the construction of the energy facility are conducted in accordance with the timetable and there are no deviations from it," Azerenergy JSC's noted.

As the ministry said, the commissioning of the new plant is scheduled till the end of this year.

There is one combined-cycle power plant with a capacity of 400 megawatts currently operating at Shimal (North TPP) power plant. Currently, power meets the needs of a quarter of the electricity of Baku and Absheron. With the construction of the second block this figure will reach 35-40 percent.

In 2013, the plant generated 1.9 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.

The power system of Azerbaijan increased its generation capabilities by 30 percent over the past five years. At the moment, the figure is 7,105 megawatts, which makes it possible to produce nearly 24 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, and this, in its turn, makes it possible for the country to annually export 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.
