UN adopts Azerbaijan's resolution on East-West project

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 18 / Trend H.Valiyev /

The 66th plenary session of UN adopted a resolution on East-West informational superhighway project proposed by Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry reported.

UN has expressed support for the project, which aims to eliminate the "information gap", reduce poverty, increase economic growth and play the role of locomotive for the development of the region.

Today, Azerbaijan and the entire Caspian region suffer from poor data networks, which cannot cope with the growing traffic. To overcome the shortage, the Communications and IT Ministry has initiated the establishment of an informational superhighway between the East and West. Negotiations are underway with CIS, European and Asian project partners.

Despite its advantageous geographical position, Azerbaijan is far from international Internet centers. Many centers are located in Western Europe, which forces Azerbaijan to use transit state traffic, which significantly increases Internet costs.

The most effective way to increase transmitted traffic volume and reduce costs is to lay fiber-optical channels through a transnational pipeline connecting Europe and Asia.

The project will connect 20 countries and work as a locomotive for regional development. The project will eliminate the "gap" between Western European and Pacific countries.
