Azerbaijan is expected to deploy mass production of light-emitting diodes (LED) by late 2014, High Tech Research Center of Azerbaijani Communications and High Technologies Ministry told Trend Aug. 21.

The research center's proposal to launch the LED production is currently under consideration by the government of Azerbaijan. It is expected that the government's final decision on this issue will be made by late this year, the research center said.

Deployment of LED production in Azerbaijan will expand the use of LEDs in street lighting, which contributes to significant energy savings.

LEDs can be used both for decorative and general lighting of architectural buildings, streets, parks and highways.

The solid-state lighting (SSL) is an energy efficient and environmentally friendly method, which, unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, can significantly save energy consumption.

The pilot project on the use of LEDs was previously implemented on one of the central streets of the city of Sheki, which reduced electricity consumption up to 70 percent.
