Iran can not be considered as possible gas supplier for Nabucco project: U.S. deputy secretary of energy

Astana, Kazakhstan, 8 October /Trend Capital, K.Konirova /

Iran can not be considered as a possible supplier of gas for the Nabucco project, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel B. Poneman told Trend Capital special correspondent in Astana.

During recent 4th Eurasian Energy Forum in Astana, former Chancellor of Germany Gerhard Schroeder said that the EU should receive gas from Iran for the realization of the Nabucco project.

"Our position is very clear. We consider it very important that Kazakhstan and the countries of Central Asia and in general energy consumers around the world have good access to oil and gas transportation through various ways," said Poneman.

According to him, with regards to gas, of course the U.S. focuses on the route of the Southern Corridor, as well as various transportation routes that lead to the Southern Corridor, including Nabucco.

"We believe that the situation with Iran creates problems because Iran does not fulfill its obligations on the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. IAEA was trying to get information from them about the nuclear program, but alas! Obviously, this causes serious concern for us," said Deputy Secretary of Energy.

He remembered that a few days ago, from cosmos was found another nuclear plant in Iran. "Considering the high level of secrecy, it becomes clear that it is not for the civil nuclear industry. It also causes concern for us. And I do not believe that Iran can be regarded as a possible source of oil and gas supplies," he concluded.
