Turkmenistan, Tajikistan to cooperate in power engineering

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Oct. 10 /Trend News, H.Hasanov/

As part of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon's two-day working visit to Turkmenistan, the sides signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation between the Ministries of Power Engineering.

Tajikistan is experiencing a shortage of electricity, whose the largest supplier in Central Asia is Turkmenistan. The existing transport infrastructure allows Ashgabat to export this type of energy to Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia.

According to Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the signing ceremony said that strengthening the legal framework will help the development of bilateral ties. He said it is important to more fully use the opportunities in such important areas as production and transportation of electricity, transport, communications, textiles and agriculture.

During the visit, interdepartmental documents were also signed between the foreign ministries of the two countries, as well as the ministries of tourism and sport. In addition, an agreement was reached to develop an agreement on the principles of indirect taxes on exports and imports of goods (works, services) between the Republic of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Tajikistan signaled its willingness to increase the supply of aluminum products and agricultural and industrial production (vegetables and fruits), as well as to promote cooperation in processing marble, granite and other building materials.

Official Dushanbe suggested raising the status of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation.

Rahmon said it is necessary to "enhance the status and further strengthening the coordinating role of the Commission in implementing the agreements already reached, the search for optimal solutions of problems, strict implementation of the entire set of obligations under treaties and agreements."
