Astana will host the 47th high-level annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on May 2-5, Kazakh Ministry of Economy and Budget Planning said on Jan.29.

Kazakh Minister of Economy and Budget Planning (ADB Governor of Kazakhstan) Erbolat Dossaev and Vice President of the Asian Development Bank Bruce Davis discussed organizational issues of preparation and holding of the meeting.

"We attach great importance to the cooperation with ADB which for its part supports Kazakhstan in modernization of the country's economy and in implementation of social projects. The preparation for holding the 47th annual meeting of ADB in Astana will be at high level," Dossaev said.

A meeting of the organizing committee was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov during which the head of the Cabinet of Ministers gave a number of orders. In particular, it concerns the increase of the number of direct flights to Astana and from Astana to South-East Asia and to provide the participants with visa support during the period of the meeting.

According to preliminary estimates, around 3,500-5,000 people including managers form ADB member states, finance ministers of ADB member states, heads of large international banks and financial organizations, as well as leading specialists of state, non-government and other organizations will participate at the ADB meeting in Astana on the topic titled "New Silk Roads - linking Asia and Europe, Asia and Europe in a changing world".

Currently, ADB's new strategy for Kazakhstan for 2012-2016 is in effect, which is the brightest indication of strengthening of economic relations between Kazakhstan and ADB and is aimed at supporting the diversification of the economy, transport, energy, urban development, small and medium-sized business.

One of the large projects of ADB is reconstruction of the "Western Europe - Western China" international transit corridor that will significantly increase the intensity of traffic through the Kazakh section.
