Kazakhstan's special services prevented nine terrorist attacks in 2013-2014, Novosti-Kazakhstan quoted Deputy Prosecutor General Zhakip Assanov as saying at the plenary session in the Senate (Parliament's Lower Chamber) on Sept. 25.

A total number of 65 extremist and terrorist crimes were registered in Kazakhstan in 2013 and 52 crimes in 2014.

The court convicted 29 people for extremist and terrorist crimes in 2014.

"For example, in April 2014, two religious radicals urged people to go to Syria and participate in military actions against law enforcement agencies, they were sentenced to five years in prison," Assanov said. "One our citizen from the city of Atyrau joined the terrorist group in Afghanistan through social networks and then tried to encourage others to become militants. He was imprisoned for 8 years,"said Assanov.

Assanov added that Kazakhstan recognized 15 organizations as terrorist and 6 as extremist since 2004.

"Their activities have been stopped," he said.

Deputy Prosecutor General reminded that over 10 terrorist attacks have been committed in Kazakhstan since 2011, as a result of which 21 people had been killed. Seventeen of those people were representatives of law enforcement agencies and government structures.
