Kazakhstan reveals cause for Almaty-Atyrau passenger train crash

Astana, Kazakhstan, Sept. 30

By Daniar Mukhtarov - Trend:

The judicial review was completed for the criminal case regarding people responsible for the crash of the passenger train No.42 running between the Almaty and Atyrau cities, Kazakh Main Transport Prosecutor's Office said Sept. 30.

It should be noted that the train No.42 crashed in April, 2014.

The transport prosecutor's office said the passenger train crashed because of a sudden bending of the railway, which was due to poor quality repairs conducted at the site a day before the accident, along with violation of the instructions and regulations.

In its message the transport prosecutor's office said that the commission of Kazakhstan Railway (Kazakhstan Temir Zholy) and specialists from the Transport Control Committee of Kazakh Transport and Communications Ministry also made such a conclusion regarding the cause of the accident.

The message said the person who was directly supervising the repairs and another person responsible for the maintenance, condition and routine of the repairs, are the defendants in this criminal case.

The Kyzylkogin District Court of Kazakhstan's Atyrau Province sentenced these persons on Sept. 26 to a conditional penalty of two years' imprisonment with a probation period of one year.

The passenger train No.42, running between Almaty and Atyrau, derailed on April 19, 2014 in the Kyzylkogin District of Atyrau Province.

The passengers suffered medium and light injuries in the accident.

The criminal investigation revealed that all the cars of the train were in good technical condition. In 2013, they underwent scheduled repairs, and in 2014 - a technical maintenance at specialized enterprises.
