By Elena Kosolapova- Trend: Kazakhstan plans to take tolls for access to 30 percent of sections of the national highway system, Kazakhstan Today news agency reported referring to Kazakh Deputy Investment and Development Minister.

"We plan to introduce charges for access to some parts of national highways in order to reduce the shortage of funds for the maintenance of highways in the first and second category. In the future we plan to transfer approximately 30 percent of the national highways to a paid system," Zhenis Kasymbek said at a briefing on Oct. 29.

New rules will be introduced at Astana - Temirtau, Astana - Pavlodar, Almaty - Kapshagay highways. These highways have high traffic and new system will have payback, he said.

Kasymbek said that 1.2 billion tenge (180.87 tenge = $1) will be received in 2014 due to fares for Astana - Shuchinsk paid highway. This money will cover 100 percent of costs for the road maintenance.
