Kazakhstan can withstand global crisis – president

Astana, Kazakhstan, Feb.11

By Daniyar Mukhtarov - Trend:

Kazakhstan is able to withstand the ongoing global crisis, the country's President Nursultan Nazarbayev said during the expanded government meeting on Feb.11.

He said Kazakhstan will benefit from the crisis to create a modern infrastructure and launch multibillion projects.

Nazarbayev said his country has every opportunity to withstand the global crisis and construct new facilities.

The president reminded that the previous crises were no less severe and lasted 2-3 years, however, Kazakhstan's economy allowed the country to successfully go through these periods.

"Kazakhstan has every opportunity and resources [to withstand the crisis]," said the president. "The government renders full support, have allocated funds, created conditions and everyone should immediately start to work [on constructing new facilities]."

Meanwhile, the head of state urged the government to be more rational in its spending, especially, in implementing various projects, holding events, anniversaries.

Nazarbayev also proposed the government to redistribute the financial flows to certain facilities by taking into account their significance.

The head of state proposed to postpone the implementation of the projects, aimed at improving the country's image until better times.

Nazarbayev instructed the government to create a reserve fund with 250 billion KZT worth reserve ($1 - 185.05 KZT) in order to implement the projects that are important for the country's economy.

"The government should create a considerable reserve in order to take operational measures," he said. "Anything can happen throughout the year, there can be external and internal influence, emergencies can arise, therefore, I instructed the government to create 250 billion KZT reserve."

The head of state added that this reserve can be used for supporting the domestic mechanical engineering and implementation of infrastructure projects.
