Main intrigue in Kazakhstan’s upcoming presidential election

An initiative was made this weekend in Kazakhstan to hold an early presidential election in 2015.

The proposal was voiced at a meeting of the Council of Kazakhstan's Assembly of People on Feb. 14 and immediately unanimously supported by its delegates.

The presidential election is to be held in Kazakhstan in 2016.

On Feb. 16, this initiative received support from the ruling People's Democratic Party Nur Otan, which gained over 80 percent of the vote in the last parliamentary elections of 2012.

Nur Otan also called on all citizens, political parties and social forces to support the initiative of holding early presidential election in the country.

Given the fact that the proposal comes from the largest and most influential political groups in the country, which enjoy great support and confidence of the people, it is very likely to be welcomed by the public and be realized.

A number of Kazakh MPs praised the proposal as the right one both from the point of view of economy (experts said 2016 will be the peak of the global economic crisis, and, consequently, in this period it is needed to focus more on work but not on election preparations), and from the point of view of law (it is also planned to hold parliamentary election in Kazakhstan in 2016, so holding both parliamentary and presidential elections in one and the same year doesn't correspond to the norms of law).

Moreover, it is worth recalling that Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev is also the head of the Nur Otan party and the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan. Accordingly, the above-mentioned initiatives are unlikely to be contrary to the opinion of the country's leader.

Who will be the winner in the upcoming election? At present, this is the main question. Incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev has not yet given a clear answer to the question about his participation in the election. But there is no reason to say that he intends to abandon politics.

At present, President Nazarbayev is one of the most active and respected politicians in the region. He regularly presents important political initiatives in the country and the world. In domestic policy, he has been the guarantor of prosperity for the country's people. The history of modern Kazakhstan is directly connected with him.

During the last presidential election in 2011, President Nazarbayev gained a landslide victory with nearly 96 percent of the votes and since then the citizens of Kazakhstan have continued to trust their president. Amid the economic and political problems in the world, and especially in the region, the people of Kazakhstan put their trust in his presidency even more than before.

The people consider President Nazarbayev as a leader who has been able to prevent events such as those in Ukraine from taking place in Kazakhstan, and has ensured stability in the country for over 20 years. His popularity is in fact so great that in case of Nazarbayev's nomination as a candidate for participation in the election, other candidates will not have little if any chance for victory.
