The observer mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) started its work in Kazakhstan to monitor the presidential election to be held April 26, the Kazakh Central Election Commission said March 30.

A meeting was held in Astana March 30 between the CEC chairman, Kuandyk Turgankulov and the head of CIS observer mission staff, Yevgeny Sloboda, during which the latter was handed over a certificate of accreditation as an international election observer.

"We intend to send out representatives in all the regions of the country," said Sloboda. "Our plans include holding meetings with representatives of the candidates taking part in the election."

He went on to add that the mission's main objective is to assist the holding of a democratic election, and the mission intends to work within the generally accepted norms of international supervision.

Turgankulov, for his part, briefed Sloboda about the work on preparation and holding of the election.
