By Elena Kosolapova - Trend: Some 140 people living in Kazakhstan's village of Kalachi have been resettled to other places, RIA Novosti reported with the reference to deputy head of Esil district Saule Agymbaeva.

The village of Kalachi became famous all over the world because of an unexplained sleeping sickness.

People fall asleep throughout the village: in the workplace, at school, in the street and it is not possible to wake them up for a few days. When they do awaken, they continue to suffer from drowsiness, memory loss and fatigue, and several have reported having hallucinations. For the first time the disease was registered in March 2013. Some individuals have been stricken several times with slumber since that time. About 130 people have fallen ill with the disease. However no one died.

"Fifty-two families, or 140 people have moved from Kalachi to other places in the Akmola region, as well as to Kostanai and North Kazakhstan region...After resettlement they had not experienced any symptoms of sleeping sickness," Saule Agymbaeva said.

A total number of 172 families or 396 people are still living in Kalach. About hundred families or 250 people more are on the lists for resettlement, Saule Agymbaeva said.

"We resettle just those people who want to move. Some villagers, especially pensioners and those who have not suffered from "sleeping sickness", refuse to move, " the representative of the district authorities said.

Kazakh authorities have allocated 2 billion tenge (185.8 tenge = $ 1) for resolution of the problems of Kalachi's dwellers. The regional authorities have started the construction of several apartment buildings for people moving from Kalachi.
A total number of 223 families live in Kalachi, including 106 families with children, Kulagin said.

Earlier, an interdepartmental working group was created in line with the instruction of Kazakh prime minister to address the situation in Kalachi. The group includes representatives of state agencies: ministries of energy, healthcare and social development, interior, national economy, as well as the national security committee and the region's local authority, and the representatives of research institutions.
