Assets of Kazakh banks up in 2016

Kazakh banks increased their total assets by 7.5 percent to 25.56 trillion tenges (324 tenges = $1) in 2016, Kazakhstan’s National Bank said in a message.

Thirty-four banks were operating in Kazakhstan as of Jan. 1, 2017.

Total liabilities of Kazakhstan’s banking sector increased by 6.7 percent to hit 22.72 trillion tenges in 2016.

The liabilities of second-tier banks in the national currency hit 50.8 percent, while their liabilities in foreign currency stood at 49.2 percent.

As much as 76 percent of the banks’ liabilities fell on customer deposits.

The loan portfolio of the banking sector decreased by 0.3 percent and hit 15.51 trillion tenges as of Jan. 1, 2017.

The share of loans overdue by over 90 days hit 6.7 percent of total loan portfolio of the Kazakh banks compared to 8 percent as of Jan. 1, 2016.
