By Temkin Jafarov, Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Tajikistan is looking forward to the north corridor connecting Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China to turn operational, Sangmuhamad Zaurov, deputy head of the Tajikistan mission in Iran told Trend June 3.

Talks on the railroad are held within the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), where one session has been held.

The second session on the project was going to be held in April, but the meeting did not convene. Now the members are planning to meet in a few days in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

"Tajikistan is ready to invest in the railroad. The railroad is of high importance for us to help boost economic relations and transit. Once the railroad is constructed, we will be able to easily transit our cargos to Chabahar and Bandar Abbas," he said.

Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan agreed on the need to construct a railway - now called the North-South Corridor - in July 2012.

At that time Iran said it was ready to finance the Kyrgyz section of the railway.

Tajikistan's Ministry of Transport and Communications said that the length of the railway linking China's Kashgar city with Afghanistan's Herat city, would be 1,972 kilometers.

The length of the Tajik section of this railway, running from the Nizhny Panj to the border with Kyrgyzstan will be 296 kilometers.

In another part of the interview, Zaurov expressed happiness over Iran's performance in carrying out the Esteghlal Tunnel project in Tajikistan.
He noted that Iran started funding the project during the administration of former president Mohammad Khatami. According to Zaurov, the project will be complete by the end of the year.
Iran and Tajikistan signed a contract on the tunnel in 2011. Iran's investment in the project has been $31 million, while Tajikistan's investment has been $10 million.
