Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov signed a decree to appoint Silapberdi Nurberdiyev as the new head of the Turkmen mission at the OSCE.

Nurberdiyev is also acting as the Turkmen Ambassador to Austria.

OSCE cooperates with Turkmenistan in areas such as border security, border management, energy security, legislative reform, and opposition to transnational threats.

Chairperson-in-Office, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Azubalis, recently paid an official visit to Turkmenistan. Then, Azubalis emphasized the need to build on what was already achieved in years of co-operation with the Organization and its Centre in Ashgabat, established in 1999. Azubalis further pointed to the need for further expanding work in mutually identified sectors, such as border security, border management, energy security, legislative reforms, and addressing transnational threats.

Other areas of continued OSCE support include combating drug trafficking, promoting gender equality, preventing human trafficking and domestic violence, and providing environmental information.

Azubalis praised Turkmenistan's engagement in promoting the establishment of an international legal basis for energy security.

"Defining the role of the OSCE in the dialogue on energy security would add value to the ongoing bilateral and multilateral activities of the Organization's participating states. Establishing this role is a priority for our Chairmanship", he said.

At the OSCE Astana Summit in 2010, Berdimuhammedov underscored that "the most important area in which the Organization should focus its efforts is the security of international energy supplies".

Turkmenistan is a significant player in the energy market in the Caspian region. The country is the fourth largest country in the world after Russia, Iran, and Qatar in its volume of natural gas reserves.

The Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline was launched in 2009 and an additional pipeline branch to Iran was launched in January 2010, thereby expanding the energy-sales market.

An additional pipeline to Russia (Trans Caspian Pipeline through Kazakhstan), Europe (Nabucco on the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan), and India (TransAfghan via Pakistan), are among the most considered projects.
