Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Oct.20 / Trend, H. Hasanov /

A delegation from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said on Thursday.

A series of meetings are being held at Turkmenistan's State Service on Combating Drugs and the country's Foreign Ministry.

A spokesman said: "Within a constructive exchange of views discussions were held on priority issues of interaction, successfully moving to bilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UNODC, and within the UN."

It is emphasised that Turkmenistan is participating in a number of relevant treaties and UN conventions and as a member of many top UN agencies, including the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, for 2012-2015, fulfils its obligations.

Stressing that the UNODC fully welcomes and supports the Turkmen leader's peace initiatives to counter global threats and today's challenges, UN agency representative Miwa Kato expressed interest in further boosting cooperation for the benefit of the region and the wider world..

Turkmenistan is a party to three international conventions on combating illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, adopted by the UN in 1961, 1971 and 1988.

The country implements a number of regional and national projects and programmes of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the EU and projects involving the U.S. and UK governments.
