On November 5-6 Avaza national tourist zone of Turkmenistan is hosting the Caspian Environment Forum, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper said on Monday with the reference to the Turkmen Ministry of Nature Protection.

The event will be attended by representatives of environmental, meteorological agencies, fisheries of the Caspian countries: Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. The participation of representatives of international and regional environmental organizations and funds, oil and gas companies operating in the Caspian shelf is expected.

The information said that, speaking at the Rio +20 global UN conference on sustainable development, held in Rio de Janeiro in June of this year, the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow outlined protection of the Caspian environment and conservation of its biodiversity among important international environmental issues.

For many years, jointly with Caspian countries Turkmenistan has been actively implementing Caspian Environment Programme (CEP), which was adopted in 1995.

The Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) was signed by the Caspian states in November 2003. This is the first legally binding agreement ratified by all five Caspian states, which defines the main regulation directions of human impact on the marine environment, protection and reproduction of biological resources of the Caspian Sea, as well as procedural issues of Caspian states' common decisions.

Turkmenistan ratified the Tehran Convention in August 2004, following ratification by all the Caspian countries, the Convention officially took effect on August 12, 2006.

The article notes that four protocols to the Convention has currently been developed by the countries: Protocol on regional preparedness, response and co-operation during incidents causing oil pollution (signed by the Caspian countries in August 2011 in the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan), the Protocol on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context, the Protocol on the Protection of the Caspian Sea against pollution from land-based sources and activities, Protocol on biodiversity conservation.
