In his letter to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov the Chairman of Russian government Dmitry Medvedev expressed the conviction that "the further expansion of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation fully conforms to the fundamental interests of the peoples of two countries."

In his opinion, significant progress was made this year in the development of Russian-Turkmen relations, based on the strong tradition of friendship and mutual understanding.

"Cooperative ties are strengthened in economy and energy, industry, agriculture, science, education and culture," the letter said.

Ashgabat recently decided to open a trade mission at the Turkmen Embassy in Moscow.
Turkmenistan has also increased the cooperation with the major regions of the Russian Federation in recent years, including Tatarstan, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan and Sverdlovsk regions and other regions of the Russian Federation.

Russia is leading the ranking of Turkmenistan's major trade partners. The largest in Central Asia educational and trade service center 'KAMAZ' is located in Ashgabat, as the total number of vehicles of this brand in Turkmenistan amounts to more than 10,000.

Partnership in the fuel and energy complex is continued. Tatneft JSC carries out work in the western region of Turkmenistan, Russian Zarubezhneft and Itera participate in development of the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea. The purchase of gas turbine power plants in Russia was recently revealed.

At the same time, in recent years the volume of Turkmen gas purchase by Gazprom was reduced in the aftermath of the global economic crisis.
