It is planned to hold an international conference on migration and stateless persons in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, in June, a message from Turkmenistan government said on April 29.

The issues regarding the preparations for this event were discussed during the meeting with the regional coordinator of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Central Asia, Bernard Doyle at Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry.

The delegation was also received at Majlis (parliament) of Turkmenistan.

"The issues relating to further expansion of the positive cooperation between the UNHCR and Turkmenistan were discussed during the meeting," according to the government message.

Turkmenistan is a permanent member of the Executive Committee of UNHCR program.
Ashgabat hosted the international conference entitled 'Refugees in the Muslim World' in 2012.

Turkmen parliament approved the draft law 'On refugees' in August 2012. The document defines the basis and procedures for recognition of foreign citizens or stateless persons as refugees in the territory of Turkmenistan. It also sets out the economic, social and legal guarantees to protect their legitimate rights and interests in accordance with the Turkmenistan's constitution, the universally recognized principles and norms of the international law.

Some 3,318 stateless persons residing in Turkmenistan's territory were granted citizenship in accordance to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov's decree.
