Turkmenistan announced the final results of election held Nov. 23 to local authorities - members of the provincial, district and city people's councils, according to a message from the country's Central Election Commission.

The announcement said the election was held in line with the principles of alternativeness, publicity and openness, becoming another vivid confirmation of Turkmenistan's commitment to democratic development.

The message said that among 3,524 officially registered candidates, some 240 members were elected to the provincial, and 1,480 - to district and city people's councils across the country.

"In all constituencies, two or more candidates ran for one mandate," the message said.

This list will be published by the press in the near future, in accordance with the legislation of Turkmenistan.

The monitoring of the voting was carried out by national observers - representatives of political parties, public associations and organizations.

Citizens of Turkmenistan, aged over 21 years, can be nominated as candidates for members of the people's councils.

The right to nominate candidates is granted by the electoral code to the political parties, public associations and citizens' groups.
