Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan exchanged views on relevant regional and international issues of mutual interest at a high level, the Turkmen government said March 18.

The discussion took place during a telephone conversation between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, the statement said.

In particular, the sides stressed the commitment of both countries to regional and global efforts in such important area as the ecology, the report said.

"As it is known, while holding an active position in this issue, Turkmenistan put forward specific initiatives, in particular, a proposal of establishing a specialized structure under the auspices of the UN, namely, a regional center for technologies related to climate change in Central Asia," the statement said.

The presidents of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have also discussed the prospects of cooperation between the two countries in key areas.

The transport and communication sector was stressed as one of the priority vectors of cooperation. Turkmenistan made a number of initiatives supported by the Uzbek side. They are being consistently implemented, the statement said.

The experts stressed the potential for broad international cooperation in the North-South, East-West, as well as by diversifying the transit transport infrastructure, in particular, the Oman-Iran-Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan corridor.
