Baku, Azerbaijan, July 26

By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

Iran and Turkmenistan stressed the need to boost cooperation to fight against terrorism and extremism in the region.

Turkmen Foreign Affairs Minister Rashid Meredov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif met in Tehran, calling for more regional effort to fight against the Islamic State group, also known as Daesh, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on July 26.

During the meeting, Zarif hailed very good relations between the two countries. The two sides discussed ways to transfer water from Iran to Turkmenistan. They also emphasized the need to extradite prisoners as a humanitarian subject.

The Turkmen official expressed hope that lifting sanctions against Iran would boost bilateral cooperation in different fields.

Meredov arrived in Iran today to participate in the 14th Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Committee Meeting.

Turkmenistan was the 7th leading importer of Iranian non-oil goods in the previous Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2015, according to the Iran Customs Administration.

Iran exported $973.65 million of non-oil goods to Turkmenistan and imported $113.72 million of non-oil goods from the country.

In March, the two countries signed 17 cooperation documents in economic, cultural, political, legal, scientific, and technological fields. The two sides are determined to boost their bilateral trade to $60 billion by the next 10 years.
