The President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, and Minister of Road and Urban Development of Iran Abbas Ahmad Akhondi recently discussed the implementation of a number of joint projects between the two countries, according to a statement by the government of Turkmenistan.

During their meeting, special attention was paid to the construction of the Sarakhs bridge and Sarakhs-Tejan road, to allow for cooperation between the sea ports in the two countries, the statement said.

The sides also discussed issues, such as increasing the transit potential of the Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway.
The statement further said that an exchange of views on the construction of a transit corridor to India through the south of Iran, as well as the inclusion of the China-India and Turkmenistan-Iran sections in this route, was discussed during the meeting.

It was further emphasized during the meeting that the North-South transport corridor will create great opportunities for the optimization of traffic flows, not only between neighboring countries, but also within the entire Eurasian territories, and will serve to intensify trade and economic relations in the region and worldwide.

During the meeting, the president of Turkmenistan and his guest discussed opportunities to strengthen mutually beneficial ties in road construction and the development of urban infrastructures, improvements of which are given the highest priority in view of the ambitious plans of building-up the Turkmen capital, as well as in the country's other major cities.

In December 2014, a ceremony to launch the new Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway took place. This corridor has opened access to Central Asia and the Persian Gulf to the countries of Europe and Asia.

In 2014, construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway line began, which has the potential to be joined by China, Kyrgyzstan and Iran.
