A business forum was held in Kuala Lumpur with the participation of the state and business circles of Turkmenistan and Malaysia, the Turkmen government said.

The forum was designed to strengthen and expand the trade-economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Malaysian National Chamber of Commerce and such large industrial companies of the country as Jimah Enerji Ventures Sdh Bhd, Petronas, Premium Vegetable Oils Sdn Bhd, Seri Makaya Travel attended the event.

The most promising areas of the mutually beneficial cooperation were discussed. Among them are investing in high-tech spheres of economy (energy, communication, transportation and processing industry), as well as the processing of agricultural products and food industry.

Among the relevant areas are also banking and city planning.

"The cooperation with Petronas Charigali is an example of the effective implementation of the existing potential of partnership in the fuel and energy sector. Petronas Charigali actively participates in the joint projects in the Caspian Sea," said the government's message.

"During the business forum, the participants discussed the possibilities of increasing the volume of trade turnover between the two countries," said the message.

Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Malaysia were established in 1992. Currently, 15 bilateral documents create the legal framework for cooperation between the two countries.

Turkmenistan's interest in developing ties with Malaysia first of all is related to the operation of this country's Petronas Charigali company in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea since 1996.

This company started commercial production and export of oil in Turkmenistan in May 2006. The produced crude is transported through Azerbaijan. The natural gas production has also become possible in recent years.
