Over 22 million tons of cargo was transported via the Turkmen railways in 2015, nearly 67 percent of which accounted for transit traffic, said the Institute for Strategic Planning and Economic Development (ISPED) of Turkmenistan.

These figures are higher than in the previous years, according to ISPED.

"The active work on modernizing internal steel trunks and technical facilities is carried out as part of Turkmenistan's Railway Transport Development Program," said ISPED. "A railway station was commissioned in Balkanabat city and the construction of Turkmenabat-Farab railway bridge is gaining a high pace."

It was also noted that the construction of Gazachak-Shahsenem-Dashoguz and Ekerem-Madav railways in the country are underway.
