Turkmenistan and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) intend to develop cooperation, in particular within the UN, a message issued by the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said Apr. 12.

A delegation of the IRU led by the General Delegate, Under Secretary General Igor Runov is on a working visit in Ashgabat. Within the framework of the meeting the sides discussed the process of Turkmenistan's joint work with the IRU.

The parties noted Ashgabat's commitment to international initiatives related to enhancing international cooperation in the transportation and communications sector.

One of the IRU's main objectives is the establishment of mutually beneficial partnership between the countries in the sphere of cargo and passenger vehicles for sustainable development of the world economy.

It is planned to hold the first UN Conference on sustainable transport system in Turkmenistan that is provided by the resolution "Towards comprehensive cooperation of all modes of transport for promoting sustainable multimodal transit corridors" adopted Dec. 22, 2015 at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

Turkmenistan takes an active part in the formation of an extensive combined transportation system in the North-South and East-West directions.
