Turkmenistan aims to become a tobacco-free country by 2025.

Turkmenistan aims to become a tobacco-free country by 2025, the 'Neutral Turkmenistan' newspaper reported Apr.23.

The newspaper said that currently, Turkmenistan is a leading country in fighting the tobacco use and the lowest level of smoking (8.3 percent of the population) has been recorded in Turkmenistan in the World Health Organization's European Region, according to the WHO Country Office.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) was adopted May 21, 2003 and entered into force Feb.27, 2005.

Turkmenistan ratified this international document on May 13, 2011. It entered into force on Aug.11, 2011.

Turkmenistan adopted the National Action Plan on Tobacco Control for 2012-2016 on Jan.6, 2012.

The plan includes the following tasks: working out the national legislation on tobacco control, increasing public awareness on tobacco smoking, research in smoking cessation, strengthening the cooperation with international organizations in this sphere and so on.
