Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov received Pakistan’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Abdul Malik, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a message.

The possibilities of expanding energy cooperation through the implementation of joint projects in this field were discussed during the meeting.

“Speaking about the high level of political and diplomatic cooperation, the sides noted the role of mutual visits at a high level,” said the message.

The Pakistani ambassador noted the active cooperation between the two countries that is based on common history, culture and traditions of the two nations.

Turkmenistan and Pakistan pay special attention to the construction of the continent’s biggest energy route – Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline.

Annual capacity of the gas pipeline will reach 33 billion cubic meters. Total length of the TAPI pipeline will be 1,814 kilometers. Some 214 kilometers will pass through the territory of Turkmenistan, 774 kilometers - in Afghanistan, and 826 kilometers – in Pakistan. The project’s preliminary cost is estimated at $10 billion.

Turkmenistan started construction of its section of TAPI in December 2015 and it is expected it will take three years.

Pakistan is also interested in purchasing electricity from Turkmenistan.
